Significance of Computer and Information Security Research

Although public and private sector enterprises in Australia have become increasingly computerised, there is still insufficient awareness of computer and information security requirements.

Mission Statement

         To provide a reservoir of expertise in computer, information and communications security for Australia.

Aims and Objectives

  • Provide appropriate encryption algorithms and protocols for public use;
  • Determine the standard of security employed by computer centres operating in the public/private sector and gauge the extent of computer abuse;
  • Provide an independent accreditation authority to certify algorithms and corporate security standards, identify potential areas of risk for computer users and assist corporations to develop computer security policy;
  • Act as a reservoir of expertise in computer, information and communications security for Australia.
  • Work within the CRC for Smart Internet Technologies to ensure that the Research Theme of Security and Privacy is integral within all research programs;
  • Develop hardware and software for secure speech, signal processing and network communications;
  • Advise governments and the community on new innovations which impinge on computer security;
  • Train computer scientists lawyers, patent personnel and others in areas related to cryptology, financial networking, computer crime, risk assessment, disaster recovery and general corporate security needs.
  • The University of Wollongong, The Centre for Computer and Information Security Research is a premier centre in the world in its knowledge and ability to train in the above areas and will be the key to initiating and implementing innovations in computer security with possible national security and commercial security implications.
